Memorial

William D. (Doug) Jarman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away May 1, 2025, surrounded by his family and dearest friends. He was born May 6, 1948, to Ruby Louise Crouse Jarman and E. Robert Jarman, whom he considered "VERY wonderful parents." Doug viewed his father as his hero, idol, and later, one of his best friends, while describing his mother as a "real Saint" whose sweetness and soft kisses he loved.

Doug met the love of his life, Marsha Crandell, on October 8, 1966. He knew instantly she was his future wife, and they were married on November 1, 1969, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Together, they built a family that became paramount to Doug. He devoted his life to serving them with unwavering kindness and a deep, abiding faith. Doug often talked about his greatest achievement being his posterity and was impressed by the work ethic of his children and grandchildren.

Known for his unparalleled humor, Doug loved to make people laugh and had an unwavering faith in God and Jesus Christ, trusting in God to provide. Never shying away from hard work, he was always excited to be pouring his energy into a new project, usually in service for others. He had the incredible talent of being able to come up with creative ideas and execute them, which would directly benefit thousands of youth during his scoutmaster years.

Following his father's example, Doug served his country with honor, volunteering for the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He served four years on active duty, including time as an Airborne German linguist on covert missions, and later joined the Arizona Air National Guard. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal and considered it a pleasure to serve the military of the greatest nation.

Early in life, Doug worked at his father's business, Jarman Auto Rebuilders. After his active military service, he faced a period of searching for stable employment. He later found fulfillment as the Camp Ranger for the Heard Scout Pueblo, where he and Marsha directed the Cub Scout Day Camp program. Doug also pursued a career in education, teaching at a high school for troubled teens and as a part-time college faculty member. He valued hard work and learned from both success and "lots of trial and error.."

A man of deep faith, Doug served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany from 1967 to 1969. He later served as Bishop of the South Mountain Ward from 1996 to 2002 and held various other callings. He possessed a strong testimony of Jesus Christ, the restoration of the gospel, and the Book of Mormon. He openly reflected on "foolish mistakes" and "shenanigans" from his youth, acknowledging disappointing his parents at times, but hoped for repentance and forgiveness, believing these experiences were for his good.

A defining part of Doug's life was his extensive involvement in the Scouting program. Following in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Scoutmaster for almost 40 years, Doug himself served as a Scoutmaster for about 40 years in the church. He loved working with young men, teaching them camping and survival skills, and led countless camping trips, influencing hundreds of boys. He even created a SCUBA Explorer Post to include his daughters. Through his dedicated service in Scouting, he achieved, rose to lead, and left everything he was involved with better than he found it. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, a high honor in Scouting, and was Woodbadge trained. His sons are also Eagle Scouts.

Doug found joy in hobbies like coin collecting, camping, traveling, and making things with his hands. He faced significant health challenges, including a diagnosis of Wegener's Granulomatosis (GPA), finding strength and inspiration through his faith and the unwavering support of his family, especially his beloved wife Marsha.

Doug often referenced "the dash" between birth and death dates on a tombstone, emphasizing that what truly matters is how one lives and loves during that time. He taught the importance of having the courage to choose the right and stand alone for one's beliefs. His family motto, "By Endurance We Conquer, Together We are Unbreakable!", reflected his belief that enduring challenges strengthen individuals and families. Doug strived to give his family a name they could be proud of and set an example for the importance of family, faith, education, service, fun, and hard work.

His life exemplified a profound love for his wife Marsha, his family, his country, and his Heavenly Father. He leaves a lasting legacy of faith, dedicated service, and enduring love, cherished by his devoted wife of 54 years, Marsha Crandell Jarman - their seven children: William Charles (Tifanni), Bryan Damond (Wendie), Banjamin Wade (Rebecca), Cynthia Rose (Belnor Segura), Jaclyn Rene (Garrett Wallace), Curtis Michael (Caitlin), and Andrew Thomas (Caitlin) - and their 36 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He always served others and ensured those around him had a place, often including them in family gatherings. Doug was a true example to all who knew him.

Viewing will be held Friday, May 9th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Legacy Funeral Home, 1130 S Horne, Mesa, AZ 85204. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 10th, at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse located at 633 S Higley Road, Mesa, AZ 85206.
