Mary Joyce Theirl, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Mary was the daughter of John and Helen Martin. She attended St. Francis grade school and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1958. Shortly after, she began her career as a secretary at the Catholic Sentinel before going on to work for the State Game Commission, Bonneville Power Administration, and the Corps of Engineers. She retired in 2005 from the Federal Wage and Hour Division, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and hard work in public service.

In 1965, Mary met the love of her life, Stephen Theirl, while taking square dance lessons — an activity that became one of her lifelong passions. They married on July 20, 1968, and shared 35 wonderful years together until Steve’s passing in 2003. Together, they raised three children and built a life grounded in love, community, and joy.

Even in retirement, Mary remained deeply involved in her community. She volunteered at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Kaiser Hospital — where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister — and the local Grange Association, where she was a board member. She was a familiar and cherished volunteer at the Milwaukie Community Center, especially during bingo nights. In addition, she was a devoted blood donor to the American Red Cross, donating blood every eight weeks for decades.

Mary was a faithful member of Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie for nearly 50 years, actively participating in parish life as a Eucharistic Minister and dedicated volunteer. Her generosity, strength, and gentle spirit touched all who knew her.

She is survived by her children: Theresa, Rose (and husband Aaron), and David; her beloved granddaughter Ruby; her sister Anne; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Steve, her parents John and Helen, her sister Phyllis, and brothers Jack and Bob.

Mary cherished time spent with her family and friends and will be remembered for her kindness, commitment to service, and deep faith.

A viewing will be held on June 1 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Celebration of Life will follow on June 4 at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Church in Milwaukie, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the American Red Cross.

Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home

At Wilhelm's Portland Memorial, we have a rich history dating back to 1901 when we became the first crematory west of the Mississippi River, known then as The Portland Cremation Association. Our historic chapel, marked by its cornerstone placed on February 5th, 1901, has stood the test of time. Today, our memorial site spans 8 stories, approximately 7 miles of corridors of beautifully preserved architecture, and the largest mausoleum on the west coast, spanning 2.5 city blocks....
