William "Bill" Wengler passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 84 years old.

Bill was deeply loved and is survived by wife, Rita Wengler, brother, James Wengler and sisters, Mary Ellen Prendergast and Catherine Wengler. His children Gretchen (Doug), Julie (Jet), John (Marcy), and Peter (Laura). He was a cherished stepfather to Candice (Dan) and Jessica. He was a proud grandfather and great grandfather to an expanding number of children. Bill was preceded in death by parents, John and Eleanor Wengler, brother Richard Wengler, sister Patricia Chigara, niece Kate Schmid and the first wife and mother of his children, Josie Driscoll.

Bill grew up in Highland Park, St. Paul, where he served as an altar boy at Holy Spirit Church. Bill joined the U.S. Army and served with pride in the 82nd Airborne Division. There, he earned the nickname "The Whip" for his unmatched speed folding parachutes -- a detail he wore with a grin and a wink.

After his military service, Bill worked for the City of St. Paul, Public Works Department before stepping into the developing area of Victoria Crossing, where he became the owner of the neighborhood favorite, Billy's on Grand -- both lasting pillars of the Grand Avenue community.

Bill lived a life full of purpose, passion, and generosity. Whether he was solving a math problem, mentoring a young entrepreneur, or sweeping the floor with efficient precision, he believed every task deserved care and pride. A "work hard, play hard" kind of man, he was quick with a joke and quicker still with a helping hand.

He was known for his open door, warm heart, and ever-ready barstool. On Christmas Eve, Bill would open Billy's to anyone who needed a place to be, offering free drinks and friendship -- a testament to his deeply held belief that not one should be alone during the holidays.

Bill was a storyteller, a dancer, a singer, and a connoisseur of White Castle sliders. He made people feel they belonged. He was a quiet teacher, a steady presence, and a fierce protector of those he loved. He stepped into many lives with humility and heart. His love was constant, unconditional, and unforgettable.

On May 20, we said goodbye to a Grand Avenue legend. But Bill's story doesn't end here -- it lives on in the people he touched, the laughter he sparked, the kindness he offered, and the love he gave so freely.

Rest easy, Bill. You earned it. We love you.
