James E. Waddle May 7, 1938 – June 16, 2025
Colonel James E. “Jim” Waddle, USAF (Ret.), passed away in Colorado Springs on June 16, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by family.
Jim was born in Orange County, California to George and Lillian Waddle. Jim graduated with the second ever class of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1960. He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years flying the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter jet in the Vietnam War. His military career took him and his family around the world, and over the years, they lived in 25 different homes. He ended his Air Force career retiring as Colonel at Warner Robins Air Force Base in 1985. Throughout it all, Jim remained deeply devoted to his family and his faith.
Jim sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs, where he was an active member for over 30 years. He was also a proud member of The Gideons International, supporting their mission to distribute Bibles and share scripture worldwide. Jim also traveled to Russia as part of a mission team, where he worked alongside others to build a church.
Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Bennie Adams Waddle; his brother Jerry Waddle (Joyce), his children Lawrence Waddle (Lori), Emily Waddle Johnson, and Robert Waddle (Patty); 9 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Known for his steady presence, sense of humor, and strong sense of responsibility, Jim lived a life grounded in service, faith, and family.
He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the cemetery pavilion at the United States Air Force Academy on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025 at 11AM. [3024 Parade Loop, Colorado Springs, CO 80840]
