Schuyler Thomas Davis, 31, known to his friends and family as Skylar / Sky, was born to his mother, Tina Davis and father Douglas Boyd on March 22, 1993. On December 13th 2024, Schuyler suffered a sudden heart attack at his home with his fiancé Nick at his side. Schuyler gained his angel wings and floated off to his next adventure.
Schuyler is survived by his mother Tina Davis, his fiancé Nick Andersen and their dog Blaze, his half-brother Douglas Giddings along with many extended family members. Schuyler also had space in his heart for quite the extensive honorary (chosen) family members.
Schuyler is pre-deceased by his father Douglas Boyd, his grandparents, and many extended family members as well as the family pets Rascal and Ayla, that were dear to his heart.
Schuyler entered the foster care system at age 7. He and his mother needed mental health services but waiting lists for these services were long. DHS was able to open those doors for Schuyler and his mother.
While in foster care Schuyler was diagnosed with various mental illnesses, physical challenges, and developmental disabilities. He returned home briefly at age 9. At which time DHS felt Schuyler needed the specialized care of residential treatment facilities. From the age of 9 to 18 Schuyler alternately spent time in residential treatment facilities for children for his many challenges and the state foster care system. Schuyler and Tina never gave up hope of his returning home.
At age 18 Schuyler transferred into the adult foster / developmental disabilities / mental health care systems. This enabled him to continue receiving the specialized help he needed for his many challenges. Schuyler, his mother and Developmental Disabilities Services took a hands-on approach in selecting each of his adult foster placements. With each placement Schuyler always set his sights on living independently. After a series of adult foster / group homes, Schuyler eventually left that system behind for independent living with his fiancé, Nick.
Throughout his life Schuyler was a force like none other. He took the Yoda quote “do or do not there is no try” seriously. Schuyler was a “doer.” As an adult he set his sights on being a police / security officer and working with children. With the help of specialized programs for adults with challenges he had the opportunity of working many brief, part time jobs. he enjoyed all the diverse jobs and received on the job trainings in a wide variety of fields that allowed him to accomplish his goals.
Schuyler was able to fulfill his dream of working in police / security careers. He loved going on "ride along" and shadow shifting with local police / security patrols and participated in various police community engagement activities and trainings. His list of part time security work is quite extensive, which includes Premier Security, Guardian Event Security, Elite Security Services, and many more. He has worked security / patrol positions for local stores, fairs, patrols/dispatch for local colleges, along with local events like Art in the Vineyard, gun shows, Comicon, along with venues like Sessions Lounge, Cuthbert and the McDonalds theaters. His security work also includes protest events like Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+, PRIDE and many more. Schuyler also enjoyed being a bouncer for many bars / and venues in the Eugene / Springfield area. He loved the jaw dropping reactions of those who knew him in childhood, when they saw him as an adult in his security uniforms working, patrolling events and other forms of security work. Where once he was the kid aggressively breaking all the rules, finding loopholes that no one thought existed, he was now among those upholding the laws, preventing the loopholes.
Schuyler fulfilled his dreams of working with children he became a trained Direct Support Professional (DSP) working brief part time jobs with special needs people. At times this put him in the unique situation of working with the same staff, in the same residential facilities that he himself was in as a child. It gave him perspective on why things were done the way they were when he was a child. It also gave him pleasure to be a part of helping children like he used to be, helping them to understand that like a Jedi warrior, the sky had no limits, just rules that can be "Jedi warrior stepping stones" to help you get where you want to be. Some of the places among many that he has worked for are Work Unlimited LLC, ARC of Lane County, Kids NW, Jasper Mountain, The Children’s Farm Home, A Family for Every Child, and many more.
Schuyler also loved the medical field careers so he went on ride along with local paramedics and became a trained medical tech/ first aid /CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) certified licensed responder. With this training he worked as a volunteer with the Red Cross, Harmony Medical and other medical / mental health agencies as mentor, peer support, and providing medical first aid care. In this job capacity he volunteered to be on the medical and first aid teams at fairs, events, protests and more. Schuyler enjoyed volunteering for disasters and disaster preparedness mock events where Red Cross, paramedics and other care providers honed their skills. Most times he kept a fully stocked medical kit and a case of bottled water in the back of his vehicle just in case he encountered someone in need.
Schuyler also tried his hand at being an actor. He was in a few short educational films used for teaching disabled people about safety preparedness. He auditioned for the X factor along with other occasional parts.. Though he knew parts for his tall height and weight were few and far between, that didn’t stop him from doing it. He absolutely loved getting casting calls, and auditioning. He loved meeting and getting tips of the trade from other established actors / actresses that he met along the way, especially his acting coach and his idols in the star wars franchise, as well as comedians and local entertainers.
Schuyler’s employment history also includes part time taxi driving, part time Uber and Door Dash. He loved driving and helping others. He was always going above and beyond his job description to ensure the safety and well-being of his senior and disabled riders.
Besides having an extensive part time employment, training history, that led him on a never ending road to adventures in hopes of finding stable employment, where his mental, physical and developmental issues didn't matter, Schuyler was also diverse in his causes. He fought for the rights of others. He received recognition awards for bringing awareness to mental health issues. He also participated in protests for equality in the areas of mental illness, LGBTQ+, Trans rights, Black Lives Matter, homelessness issues, and the rights of those in the drag performance community.
Not only did Schuyler fight for the rights of others he quite literally gave freely to those in need. If he saw a need he gave even if it meant he went without. He would pawn his own things just to go buy a homeless person a pair of shoes, or get someone else a bag a groceries or give to others that were struggling to make ends meet. So much so that he himself rarely had anything left over for himself. and often put himself in danger of homelessness. Save for a rainy day just wasn't in his vocabulary when he saw so many others hurting and struggling.
Schuyler also considered himself an entrepreneur. When he was 18, he started his own non- profit company called Project Foster Kids. It started with an idea of giving back to the foster care system in the form of setting out collection boxes and delivering donated items to those who work with foster children. It spiraled into multi -city wide where people were contacting him to ask how to donate items or if they could help him pick up and deliver donations. Soon he had a wide range of volunteers helping him to collect and deliver donated items to programs that work with foster children. Unfortunately, as he came close to hitting the 10-year anniversary, covid hit the world. he and his volunteers could no longer set out their collection boxes for donations to foster children programs . In 2023 Project Foster Kids shut down permanently. Looking back on those days Schuyler would often say he was so proud that he was able to make a difference for foster children.
Schuyler’s favorite activities, when he was not on the job, was spending time with his mother, fiancé, and his friends. He loved photography, Karaoke, trips to the coast, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, the Hunger Games, Nintendo and online gaming.
Schuyler leaves behind quite the legacy in the memories of those that knew and loved him. The family could not have gotten through this hard time with out decades long best friend Cristy who Schuyler called Aunt Cristy. She was there for this family through thick and thin, good times and bad. ready to laugh, cry and kick butt when and if needed. After Schuyler gained his angel wings she was the family's rock and shoulder helping to navigate through it all. Thank you just doesn't cover it all. To the moon and back and on through infinity and beyond says it best.
There is also another person that the family wishes to thank. Sometimes in life people grow and bond on a non biological "heart sibling" level. Unfortunately Its very hard for the surviving "heart sibling" when one in the relationship gains their angel wings. The "heart sibling" relationship must be put aside while the family works on the legalities of posthumous investigations, paperwork with the police, paramedics, medical examiner and mortuary on fulfilling the deceased immediate posthumous care, directives, wishes. Megan and Schuyler are "heart siblings" there for each other through thick and thin since childhood. Megan's heart left no stone unturned in efforts to be there for Schuyler posthumously. Many thanks goes to Megan for going above, beyond and ultimately finding a way to fulfill their hearts promise to Schuyler. Though we had to put aside the heart sibling relationship to get the legalities done and uphold Schuyler's last wishes and directives, she will always be Schuyler's heart sibling. As Schuyler would say - Always and forever Megan.
The family wishes to thank Musgrove mortuary and their kind and caring staff for all their help in navigating Schuyler's posthumous care, upholding his last wishes and also for setting up a way for his friends and family to donate directly to the costs of his care and cremation.
There are no funeral services per Schuyler’s wishes. Instead, Schuyler's family and friends celebrated his life in many private individual celebrations where each of his various groups of family, friends and co workers did their own "Schuyler-ish" event on or around his birthday such as a pie eating event, harry potter and star wars themed events, hanging out, reminiscing over his favorite foods and drinks at Schuyler's favorite bars, restaurants and many more.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to take the form of giving supplies to foster care, homeless shelters, volunteer your time with your local agencies such as red cross, mental health agencies, foster care, paramedics and police departments.
