Obituary Joseph D. Meyer Joe Meyer, 79 passed peacefully at home Wednesday April 8, 2020. Joe was born August 29, 1940 in Los Angeles California to Don and Erema Meyer. He was the eldest of four boys, Joseph, Dennis, Gary, and Douglas. He attended elementary school in Willits California and Dayton Iowa. While in Dayton, Joe was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The family then moved to Ukiah California, after their Iowa farm flooded. He attended High School in Ukiah and was a member of the competitive golf team. In May of 1959, after graduating, Joe enlisted in the US Air Force. Upon completion of basic training in San Antonio Texas, he was stationed at Otis Air Force base in Cape Cod Massachusetts. During a noreaster in March of 1960, Joe suffered a foot injury when a snowplow blade dropped and crushed his right foot, as base personnel were required to keep the runway open and free of snow accumulation for radar planes operating on the DEW line. He recuperated at Chelsea Navy Hospital before being transferred to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital where he underwent three surgeries to reconstruct his foot. He was medically discharged from the Air Force in July 1963 after finishing his time at ENT Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. During this time, he met Carolyn Bauer and they were married on November 27, 1964 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lakewood, CO. The newlyweds lived in Arvada Colorado where Joe worked with his father at Meyer & Sons. In 1966 they welcomed their son Daniel Joseph, and in 1970 were blessed with their daughter Christina Lynn. In 1971 the family began a new adventure when they moved to Longmont and bought Garden Acres Hardware in North Longmont. They renamed it Meyers Hardware and were in business for nearly 20 years. They also owned the Pack & Ship stations located in both the hardware store, and the Twin Peaks Mall. They kept these for several years after selling the hardware store. In 1974 they moved from Longmont to acreage on Apple Valley Road in Lyons, where they made their home for the next 25 years. In 1981, they welcomed Catherine Lacey into the family. All three children attended elementary and graduated from Lyons High School. In 1999 the Lyons home was sold and Joe, Carolyn, and Catie moved back to Longmont. Joe semi-retired for a time and then had the opportunity to invest in Mamas Caf in Lyons. After the 2013 flood, the caf was relocated to Longmont. He also became involved with MJ Auto Sales in Wyoming, and Magnum 66 Auto Sales in Greeley.Joe enjoyed fishing and loved the mountains of Colorado. Family time was often spent at their cabin of many years at Home Stake Trout Club near Leadville. He also enjoyed painting landscapes. Joe and Carolyn also cherished the opportunity to travel to many international locations with family and friends. A great man of faith, Joe was active on numerous boards at Messiah Lutheran Church where he and Carolyn have been members since 1971. Joe and Carolyn were actively downsizing and preparing for a move to The Village Co-op in Longmont, where they had already fostered many friendships. Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn, son Dan (Alicia), daughters Christi(Bill), Catie(Duffy), and five grandchildren: Peyton, Marin, Garrett, Kinslyn, and Ayslee.
