William Carrington Gifford
November 16th, 1956 - September 9th, 2022
William (Bill) Carrington Gifford was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 16, 1956, to Charley and Betty Gifford. On September 9, 2022, in Denver, Colorado, Bill passed away surrounded by family, as a result of illness. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Scruggs. His children, Taviare (Patrice) Conner and Tahbrez Conner will continue his legacy, as will his many siblings, Betty Farrell, Jean Gifford (Jodi Barkley), Charley (Diana) Gifford, John (Mary) Scruggs, Terry Gifford, and Kathy (David) Vance, and 16 nieces and nephews and their respective children. Bill has 11 beautiful grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. His greatest joy was spending time with family, especially his grandkids. Bill's career focused on positions where he was in service to others. He spent several years helping the homeless in Memphis by operating a Catholic Worker House. Bill and his mom co-authored a book about those experiences; the book was published under the title Catholic Worker Daze. Bill also worked as a substitute teacher at Holy Name Ministries in Memphis and on the Navajo Indian reservation in New Mexico. Bill enjoyed golf, reading, puzzles, games, and loved to watch the New Orleans Saints, as well as college sports teams from Memphis Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide. He also enjoyed listening to classic rock and soul music. All who knew Bill will remember him for his wit, intelligence, and helpfulness. Bill was a hard worker who was always willing to pitch in, from showing kindness to parents who needed help with their kids to coordinating renovations to make an old home habitable again. Bill was often the quiet one in the room and when he spoke others appreciated his keen mind and sometimes marveled at the breadth of his knowledge. Bill always displayed a great sense of humor, frequently sharing fun stories of growing up in the Gifford home. Bill's sense of humor never wavered, even through his final days.
