Phillip Douglas Guthrie
September 6th, 1942 - March 4th, 2021
Phillip Douglas Guthrie passed away at the home of his daughter, after a battle with Alzheimer’s, on Thursday, March 4th, 2021. He was born on September 6, 1942, in Jerome, AZ, to Carlton Holman and Tannie Mae Guthrie. He was the third of 3 sons to join the family. Phil moved with his parents to The Grand Canyon where he graduated high school in 1960 as the Salutatorian of his class. Phil received his Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from Northern Arizona University. He went on to receive his Master’s degree in Silviculture from Washington State University. Upon graduation, he spent many years working for the Forest Service where his love of the outdoors was manifest in caring for the forests, including managing logging contracts, surveying and fighting fires. After his time with the Forest Service he relocated with his family to the Mesa, AZ area where he started his second career as a life insurance agent. Phil was honored to serve 3 full-time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The first was as a young man in Germany and Italy. Later in his life he served in Palmyra, NY and the Washington, DC Temple with his late wife Marianne. Phil is preceded in death by his parents (Carl and Tannie Mae Guthrie), wives (Suzy and Marianne Guthrie), and brothers (Carl and Don Guthrie). He is survived by his sisters-in-law Bonnie and Sharon Guthrie, children Phil (Jeannie) Guthrie, Mark (Missy) Guthrie, Ray (Alecia) Hamaker, Erin (Joe) Wilkinson, Amanda (Jeremy) Flores, Katie (Dustin) Lowe, Stacey (Tom) Rogers and Rebecca Kalberg. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 20, 2021 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 2715 E Ocotillo Rd. San Tan Valley, AZ 85140. The viewing will be from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with the funeral starting at 10:00am. Internment will be at the Mesa City Cemetery.
