Cherie Boothe Mangum
February 22nd, 1946 - July 22nd, 2021
Cherie Boothe Mangum, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on July 22, 2021, after complications from a stroke. She leaves behind a son, Ryan (Emily) and four grandchildren, Henry, Walter, Theodore, and Alice. Her father Lewis LaLand Boothe, her mother Valoy Jensen Boothe, her brother L. Larry Boothe, and her sister VaLaun Schoens predeceased her as did her first child, Christopher Mangum (1984-1986) and a grandchild, Margaret Mangum (2018). Cherie was born February 22, 1946, in Honeyville, Utah. She spent her early life there and in Brigham City, Utah. Cherie grew up playing the piano and accordion, and once placed second in a Box Elder county fair accordion competition. Cherie attended Utah State University, where her peers elected her as student body officer. Passionate about politics, she later relocated to Washington, D.C., where she lived until 1976. While in D.C., she worked successively on the staffs of Utah Senator Frank Moss, Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey, and the Joint Economic Committee. She was applauded for her work and traveled with committee members to conduct investigations and hearings. After marrying J. Kenneth Mangum, Cherie moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where she stayed active in politics and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cherie obtained her BA with honors in Sociology from Arizona State University. She also ran for a Phoenix city council seat and was active in the local Democratic party. Cherie worked professionally in real estate and spent time in the hospitality industry. Cherie harbored a quick wit and sought out engaging conversation, which she often punctuated with her vibrant laugh. She frequently organized dinners and social gatherings. She was inquisitive, an avid moviegoer, a golfer, and sought every opportunity to travel. She cared deeply for her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the National Down Syndrome Society at ndss.org/donate. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 pm on July 29, 2021, at Legacy Funeral Home, 1374 N Arizona Ave, Chandler, Arizona 85225. A graveside service will be held at San Tan Memorial Gardens at 9 am on July 30, 2021. The address for the cemetery is 22425 East Cloud Road, Queen Creek, Arizona 85142.
