Mark Andrew McNaughton

Mark Andrew McNaughton, of Fresno, CA finished his work on earth on May 23, 2017 at the age of 61. He was greeted at Heaven's gate by his loving parents, Doris Loraine and Austin Preece McNaughton. Mark was born on February 27, 1956 in Fresno. He attended BYU where he competed in both track and football, and was a lineman on the 1974 Conference Championship Football team. He loved his WAC Championship ring and wore it as often as possible. Following his mission in Guatemala, Mark transferred to Fresno State where he continued to compete as a two-sport athlete. Though he was raised in the city, his heart was pure country. He never hesitated to share his passion for horseback riding--or hard work--with anyone who would listen. It was never hard to listen, either, because Mark was a loving and loveable man whose uproarious stories and laughter could make anyone feel at ease. He was a true servant of the Lord and held many church callings throughout his life, and he lived to serve as an example to all who met him. He was unforgettable with his silly dances, gifts of song and storytelling, competitive nature, and was a true master of the grill. He could fix anything, and even when life threw him some curveballs, he always responded with true grit. Of the various hats Mark wore, his favorite was that of a family man (as long as it included a cowboy hat every now and then!). He is survived by his children Austin (Meghan) McNaughton, Kelli (Ryan) Droeg, Jennifer Smith, Brooke McNaughton, and Camille McNaughton; former wife and mother of their children, Shelly Sue McNaughton; grandchildren Tatum, Hannah, and Ryan Droeg, Easton and Kadence McNaughton, and Emmalee Smith; siblings Gloria (Dennis) McCauley, Austin (Barbara) McNaughton, Nancy (Wayne) Garrett, Stephen (Linda) McNaughton, and Matthew (Kathy) McNaughton. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved german shepherds, Butkus and Ammon. If he were here now, we imagine he would remind us of his favorite idiom: "It is what it is." He would not want us wasting our time trying to change what cannot be changed. Instead, he would want us to rise up to meet the challenges we face with focus and love. In so doing, we can keep his precious memory alive. Services will be held on Thursday, June 1st, 2017 at Meldrum Mortuary in Mesa, AZ at 10:00 AM.
