Grant Ronald Ellsworth

Born to William Ronald Ellsworth and Eugenia Winnifred Guthrie passed away at home at the age of 92. A third generation resident of Arizona and Mesa. Known for quiet intelligence and ability, he served as Student Body President at Mesa Union High School. Attended the University of Arizona, joined the Army ROTC and trained with the Calvary unit. He graduated with high distinction earning a Bachelors of Science in Metallurgical Engineering, offered a fellowship at MIT but declined . He chose to serve his country during World War II in Patton's 3rd Army and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He married 65 years his high school sweetheart, Fern Elizabeth Shill, and then bought a farm in Higley which he farmed for the next 60 years, through the end of 2013. At various times during his life, farmed or raised cattle in Idaho, Utah, Mexico, and Arizona. One of his great passions was to make land productive. His other great love was fishing. An active lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was a man of integrity, honesty, loved his family, and treated everyone with kindness. He had a gift of helping of others. He is preceded in death by his son, Lansing Grant, a nephew, Dallin, brother Vaughn and sisters Winnie and Thelma. He is survived by a sister, Georgia and brother John, his wife Fernie, and children Rene Dwight Allen, Mark, Michele David Broadbent, Stacy Steve Shaha and David Marcia Mead. He and Fernie have 22 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday January 11th at the LDS Lehi Stake Center, located at 1430 N. Grand, Mesa Az, 85201. A Viewing will be at 11 am, followed by the Memorial service at 1:00 pm.
