Henry John Wereszynski, US Army, Retired, died in Carmel Valley on October 14, 2014, at the age of 83. He was born in Utica, New York, in 1931, the seventh and youngest child of Wladislaw and Czeslawa Wereszynski. Henry joined the Army at the age of 20 and had a long and distinguished military career, including combat duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. His many decorations included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired in 1983 at the rank of Colonel, having completed 32 years in service to his country. Upon retirement, he worked as the corporate administrator of Goldsmith Jewelers, office manager of the Visiting Nurse Association, and a sales associate at Gasper Jewelers. He attended San Carlos Church, and was the 60th president of the Kiwanis Club of Monterey. While on assignment in Hawaii, Henry met Shirley Wamsley in Waikiki and they married in 1956. Their next duty station was the language school in Monterey. He and Shirley fell in love with the area and vowed to return one day. In 1972, Monterey became their permanent home. Henry is survived by Shirley, his loving wife of 58 years; his son Stephen and wife Virginia; his daughter Karen Conger and husband Brad; and five grandchildren, Joshua and Kristen Wereszynski, and Jennifer, Melissa, and Kelsey Conger. In accordance with his wishes, a private family service has been held. Gifts in remembrance may be made to Heartland Hospice.
