Joan B. McVay

Joan McVay, 83, a resident of Monterey County since 1959, passed away at home in Carmel with family on December 20, 2016. Joan was the eldest child, and only daughter, of Arthur Brown and Mercia (Fox) Brown. She was born and raised in Los Angeles where she met and married her husband, Robert (Bob) McVay. Joan, Bob and two children settled in King City in 1959 when they purchased radio station KRKC. Two more children were soon born in King City and Joan became an active participant in King City's community while raising her children and supporting her husband as he expanded his King City business to include the cable television system and a radio station in Salinas. After Bob's death, Joan moved to Carmel where she resided for the past 28 years. She enjoyed traveling, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, ballroom dancing, golf, and assisting various community groups. Joan was predeceased by her husband of 35 years and her brothers Thomas Brown and James Brown. She is survived by brothers Richard Brown and Gerald (Rhonda) Brown; her four children Sharon (Steve) Friedman, Steven McVay, Kathleen McVay, and Kenneth (Kimberly) McVay; her 11 grandchildren Scott (Joanna), Beth, Kurt (Carolyn), Lauren, Taylor, Breanne, Austin, Colin, Karsten, Kiernan, and Kyler; and her four great-grandchildren Toby, Mollie, Justin, and Kara. A private service and burial will be held in Los Angeles at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family wishes to thank her first caregiver Andrea, and her caregivers from Victorian Home Care, Choice Home Health Care, and Hospice of the Central Coast. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (hdsa.org) or Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (madd.org).
