Bernard Joseph Long, Jr. (80 years old) passed away on Friday, June 8th at Freedom Pointe in The Villages, Florida. Bernie was born in Windsor, Vermont on May 15, 1938. His family moved to Brooklyn, NY when he was a boy and would "summer" at their cabin in Wolfe Pond Park in Staten Island, NY. At the age of 15, his family moved permanently to the Tottenville section of Staten Island. It was at Tottenville High School, that he met the love of his life, Lois T. Long (nee Walker). Bernie graduated Tottenville High School in 1956. Bernie joined the Marine Corps in January 1957 and served honorably for 3 years. Bernie and Lois married on October 8th, 1960 and were married for 52 years upon her death in Februrary, 2013. They had two children and 5 grandchildren. Mr. Long worked on Wall Street for 36 years. In 1974, he became a member of the New York Stock Exchange. He worked for Dean Witter for 32 years until his retirement in 1997. Mr. Long enjoyed fishing in the open waters of Raritan Bay off Staten Island and New Jersey, as well as lake and stream fishing in the Poconos where he and Lois had a vacation home in Lake Naomi for many years. In 2003, the Longs moved to Hacienda North in The Villages. While living in The Villages, Bernie enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Irish American, Shamrock and Celtic Clubs. He moved to Freedom Pointe in July, 2016. Mr. Long was predeceased by his parents, Bernard J. Long, Sr. and Madeline Long, sister Betty Ryan, and brother-in-law James Ryan. Bernie is survived by his children, Scott A. Long and Cynthia C. Delaney. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Alessandra Messineo Long and son-in-law, Joseph A. Delaney as well as his granddaughters Samantha A. Delaney, Isabella M. Long, Sophia A. Long and grandsons Joseph A. Delaney, Jr. and Declan M. Long. Mr. Long is also survived by his brother Nelson DeArce and his wife Jennifer, sister Rose Lopez, brother-in-laws Rober C. Walker and Harry L. Walker and their wives Barbara and Ruth as well as many nieces and nephews. Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, The Villages, FL is handling the cremation. A memorial service will take place up north for family and friends on July 8th. Details will be shared at a later date.
