Calvin Curtis Massey
September 5th, 1942 - December 9th, 2021
"Mighty man of God, man of valor, man of courage, man of strength!"Calvin "Cal like California" Curtis Massey was born September 5, 1942 in Dallas, Texas. Cal grew up and cut his teeth at 19 as a business owner in Morro Bay, California. He worked his way through school at Cal Poly where he met Jan. Leaving a legacy in California, Cal, his wife Jan, and five of their children moved to Colorado Springs in 1993, where they had four more kids together. Cal passed away on December 9, 2021 at 79 and is survived by his wife, eleven children, and eleven grandchildren. Cal viewed himself as "an average guy who loved God, Jan, and our children." He wished to "be a Jesus follower and a mentor to men. To give myself for my wife and children." He was that and much more. A king among men, a spiritual father, a humble man who commanded attention and respect, - especially when he squeezed your shoulder. From the moment you shook his hand, you knew what a truly genuine person he was. It was a privilege to sit at the table with him and the invitation was always open. His favorite place was "home with Jan" and he enjoyed "playing cards and games with family and friends." Cal was a wonderful friend, an example of what it means to be a man, a teacher of spiritual disciplines, and a wise counselor. He was a gentle, tender, loving, and kind husband who exhorted the men in his life to be the same. God came first, his wife second, and everything else after. You could count on him being up early every morning spending time in the scripture, poring over his prayer list, and filling the house with the sound of hymns while he did the dishes. He held himself to the highest standard. His example of discipline and consistency in striving to please the Lord in every area of his life inspires so many of us. He was generous with his support, wisdom, perspective, and prayers. He would walk through any problem with you, activating his prayers through powerful conversations and helping in any way he could. Full of fatherly advice, he was a master at speaking the truth in love. Always a straight shooter, he'd keep you accountable and not allow excuses for poor behavior, all the while reminding you that you are loved, forgiven, and invaluable. Cal's ministry extended to his businesses Academy Car Care & Repair and Autohouse. He held his operations to the highest standards of service and integrity, always representing Christ. There are countless stories of him blessing people with a ride, a repair, or even a vehicle. He was incredibly generous both in his personal and business life. Whenever he was responsible for providing food, you could count on there being too much because he'd always "just get both". He strove to ensure people felt loved, wanted, and taken care of. Cal quickly became a pillar in any group he joined. His commitment to community was evident in his attendance of church, prayer meetings, fellowship opportunities, and important events. His unwavering support has had an incredible impact. Cal was a man of God who used his prophetic voice to encourage and speak life into so many. He encouraged us to "learn from others' mistakes so you won't make so many and to follow hard after God". He was like Jesus when he called people to be better, even when the evidence indicated that potential was a long way off. He was truly a rare breed. He encouraged us to follow him while he followed Christ, and we look forward to seeing this good and faithful servant again.
