John William Clowers
October 13th, 1933 - June 30th, 2021
John W. Clowers, 87, passed away June 30, 2021 at his home in Peyton, Colorado. He was born October 13, 1933 to Melvin and Esther Clowers in Perryville, Arkansas, the second of four children. The family subsequently moved to California where John graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1951. John moved to Colorado Springs around 1964 and worked for Western Electric/Mountain Bell as a central office repairman for thirty years. This is where he met Patsy Cook in 1966. John asked Patsy out and, as they say, the rest is history. On June 1, 1968 they were married at the Peyton Community Church. And for fifty-three years they have traveled near and far together.John spent his life coaching, mentoring, teaching, and volunteering at Peyton and surrounding communities. In the early 1970's, John gave his time as a Sunday School teacher at Peyton Community Church. He served on the Church Board for several years as well. John was a member, volunteer, and trainer of the Peyton Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years. He also served on the Peyton Fire Protection District Board in subsequent years. John was a member of the Peyton School Board and served as Board President for two terms in the late 1970's and 1980's. For several years, John drove a bus for the Peyton, Calhan, and Falcon schools and became a state-certified bus driver trainer while at Falcon.John volunteered immeasurable hours in his service to the community, especially Peyton Schools. John (and Patsy) coached Pee Wee basketball in Peyton for nearly twenty years. Later volunteering as line judge for volleyball games; chain gang for football games and finally settling in as clock/timekeeper and scorebook official for the Peyton Junior-Senior High Basketball programs. At the 2014 awards ceremony honoring basketball officials, John and Patsy were inducted into Honorary Membership of the Colorado IAABO Board 4, one of the leading Basketball Officials Associations in the state. Thousands of miles were traveled over three decades as they accompanied the teams near and far. He was a mentor to many and the number one fan of every athlete or student he met, not only at Peyton but schools statewide. His sense of humor and always-ready smile were engaging to everyone he knew. John was a classic car enthusiast. Anyone that knew him has likely seen his restored 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, either in a homecoming parade or just cruising around the area. In addition to numerous road trips over the years, to car shows nationwide, the San Luis Valley Early Iron Festival in Alamosa, Colorado, became a treasured family tradition each Labor Day weekend.During their time together, John and Patsy made a life on a small ranch northeast of Peyton. They raised cattle and horses, baled hay in the summer, shoveled snow and broke ice in the winterevery minute treasured.John has left a legacy of service, sportsmanship, and kindness to our Peyton Community and beyond.
