George R. Greenway, 81, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, died December 5, 2018.He was born June 2, 1937 in Jersey City, New Jersey to Rowland and Elinor Greenway.George graduated from high school in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He earned a bachelors in German from Ohio Wesleyan University, and a masters in Public Administration from George Washington University.He was an officer in the U.S. Air Force for twenty-six years, and served as a budget officer and comptroller. After George retired from the Air Force, he was executive director of two Olympic sports - Weight Lifting and Archery.George was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church where he served as treasurer. He also served on other boards, including the board of the Friendship Force of the Pikes Peak Region and the board of the radio station, KCME.He loved classical music and enjoyed our local symphony concerts. George also loved listening to the opera on KCME and seeing the live opera broadcasts in the theater.Throughout his life, he kept himself fit by running, walking, hiking and biking. He enjoyed hiking with his hiking group, as well as with his dogs. George would run at lunchtime each day during his working years, and during those runs, he would often get inspiration, or "zingers", for problems that were bothering him. After retirement, he would continue his daily walks with his dogs on the Santa Fe Trail.George enjoyed having a vegetable garden where ever he lived.Summer family trips to Emerald Isle, North Carolina, were a special time for George to body surf, a skill he learned while growing up on the New Jersey coast. He enjoyed passing on that skill to his sons and his oldest grandson.George started his love of traveling during a summer in Europe while he was in college. He was also stationed in Italy, Turkey, Vietnam, Germany and Greece while he was in the Air Force. George enjoyed traveling with the Friendship Force, and he stayed in the homes of people in New Zealand, England, Northern Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, and Peru. He also travelled to Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica.He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, John R. Greenway.George is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Karlyn; his sons, John "Philip" (Barbara) Greenway, and James "Jamie" Greenway; his daughter, Beth (Mark) Schoenfeld; his daughter-in-law, Marjorie; his grandchildren, JR (Joy) Greenway, Laura (Phil) Heck, Landon Schoenfeld, Ellie Schoenfeld, Madison, and Katie; his sister, Mary Edwards; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Greenway.Celebration of Life, 10:00AM, Saturday, January 26, 2019, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 7400 Tudor Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80919.
