Ken Platt
October 22nd, 1939 - August 3rd, 2012
Ken Platt, 72, joined our heavenly father Friday, August 3, 2012 with his wife and daughter at his side. A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, August 9 at First United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs. Ken was born October 22, 1939 in Worland, WY. In 1966 he married the love of his life, Kay Blackwood. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1961 earning his Bachelors. JFK inspired Ken to do something for his country and he joined the Peace Corp in the Philippines. Upon returning to the US, he enrolled in Northern Illinois University where he earned his Masters. Ken spent the next 20 years as a principal in the DeKalb, Illinois school district. Looking for a change, he moved to Naperville, Illinois and spent the next 20 years as a financial planner. Since retiring to Colorado Springs, Ken has enjoyed 12 years savoring the views of the majestic Rockies. He enjoyed morning coffee and evenings rocking on his deck overlooking Pikes Peak with his wife. Ken's family was his priority and focus in life. His legacy and spirit live on in his doting wife of 46 years, Kay, son Shane and Michelle Platt of Southlake, TX, son Mark and Alise Platt of Dallas, TX, and daughter Sheri and Bobby Underwood of Colorado Springs. Ken leaves behind his greatest treasure, his 10 grandchildren (Carson, Rylan, Harrison, Kendall, Haley, Zachary, Kenzie, Sophie, Sawyer and Shepard) who will never forget how their G-Pops made them each feel special. Ken is also survived by younger sister, Nadine Nielsen of Boston, MA, her husband Larry and family. Ken was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and committees. He was a Stephen Minister leader and coordinator with John Wesley Ranch. Ken will always be remembered for his warm smile and engaging personality. Everyone was a friend. He never sweated the small stuff and would strive to make every day, every moment important. His greatest gift was his time and he shared it generously. Ken loved the outdoors, camping and road trips. He was an avid traveler and enjoyed sharing new adventures with his friends and family. Heaven welcomes a man at peace with the Lord, one full of laughter and infectious joy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to John Wesley Ranch, 420 North Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
