Melvin Johns
February 11th, 1937 - December 3rd, 2020
The lord took Melvin Johns home into his care on December 3, 2020 in Venice, Florida. Melvin was born on February 11, 1937 in Bradenton, Florida to his parents Charles Albert Johns and Velvie Claire Monteith Johns. He graduated from Manatee High School in 1955. Following graduation, Melvin went on to work for the General Telephone Company (GTE) where he created a long lasting 40-year career. He was also a Sergeant (E-4) Marine Reservist and was Honorably Discharged in March of 1962. He and his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Snapp, married in 1958 and went on to have 2 daughters, Kathy and Karen. In 1967, the family moved to Venice, Florida where Melvin resided until his passing. During his time in Venice, the family was very active in the church community. The family attended South Venice Baptist Church until 1997. During his time there, he was the Church Treasurer, Trustee, Deacon, and Sunday School Teacher. Currently they attended the Grace United Methodist Church where Melvin was still very active and was known fondly as ""The Gritsman"" thanks to his famous grits. Melvin is survived by his wife, Phyllis Johns of Venice, Florida, his daughters, Kathy (Paul) Stark of Orlando, Florida and Karen (David) Sutton of Palmetto, Florida, his granddaughter, Sierra Sutton of Palmetto, Florida, his grandson, Kyle Stark of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, his sister Joyce Draper, of Old Town, Florida, his brother, Marvin (Claudia) Johns of Thomasville, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Albert Johns and Velvie Claire Monteith Johns. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 3PM at the Grace United Methodist Church in Venice, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Grace United Methodist Church.
