James A. Laurino
June 10th, 1935 - October 4th, 2020
James A. Laurino June 10, 1935 - October 4, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Anthony Laurino. He is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-three years Arline (Anderson) Laurino, his sister Adelaide Knowles, sons Pasquale (John Komasa), Carl (Jerilyn), Jimmy (Diane), and Michael (Trinity); and his daughter Catherine Ketler (Tim Kennedy), his grandchildren Chase and Trent Sanborn, Nick, Alexa, HaliMae and Olivia Laurino, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Pasquale and Adelicia (Carleo) Laurino, and his brothers Frank and Onofrio, as well as his daughter Marie Sanborn. Jim was an extraordinarily talented renaissance man. His success in business was fueled by his academic accomplishments at St. Francis College in New York, and Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Jim Joined Riverside Paper Corporation as Vice President of Finance and was eventually promoted to CEO of the renamed Amricon Corporation in Appleton Wisconsin. He finished his business career as Executive Vice President in charge of global specialty papers at Hollingsworth and Vose near Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to his tremendous success in the business world, Jim was an accomplished musician and artist. He served as a violinist for the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra in Appleton, Wisconsin for 20 years. He also shared his musical talent with the Venice Symphony Orchestra for 12 years. His talent for art likely began from the time that he could hold a pencil, and it was on display in doodles on envelopes to the end (some of which are suitable for framing). He became a prolific painter in the late 1960's and early 1970's when he produced oil on canvas works that adorn his own and many other households including portraits of family members (wife Arline, his father, and uncle Jim), Arturo Toscanini, stills, and landscapes including an at-sea version of ""Old Ironsides"" The USS Constitution. Jim's love of golf was apparent in his actions: whether it was risking his father's wrath by prioritizing the game over studies, 3:00AM wakeup calls to get in queue in the New York metropolitan area public golf scene, or the numerous books, videos, equipment, gadgets or studies of the mental side of the game, his love and devotion enabled him to “punch above his weight"" on any golf course. He reached his pinnacle of success when he became the A-Flight champion in the Appleton City Tournament, followed closely by his capture of the ""Green Jacket"" in the Riverview Country Club season-long better ball competition. He was an early adopter of technology and he used it to facilitate his interest in music, and his voracious appetite for knowledge. Jim purchased his first personal computer in the early 1970's, and taught himself to program it in Basic language. He continued to stay on the cutting edge of technology throughout his life, and the evening before his passing he requested his i-pad so he could check his e-mailâ¦and most likely listen to one of his favored political podcasts. He had a sense of community and demonstrated it with numerous contributions of his time, talent and treasure including his chairmanship of the United Way fundraising campaign in the 1980's, as well as board of trustee responsibility for numerous non-profit organizations. But it is fair to say that the main focus of his life was the near seven decade love affair he had with his wife Arline, and the well-being of the children they raised, and their grandchildren. We will all miss him. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, 10am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1301 Center Road, Venice, Florida 34293. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in James name to the American Cancer Society. To leave a condolence for James please visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
