Kathryn E. Martell
February 11th, 1936 - August 17th, 2018
Kathryn E. Martell passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2018 after a courageous two year battle with sarcoma cancer. She was born February 11, 1936 and was raised in Shawnee, Kansas near Kansas City, Missouri. In recent years she lived in Venice, Florida and previously resided many years in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was strong in her religious faith, loved God, attended church and prayed the rosary each week, especially for those on her prayer list. Kathryn lived most of her years as a homemaker and lovingly raised and nurtured three wonderful children. When her children left home to pursue their careers she embarked on two of her own. She did modeling for print ads and television and received praise and recognition of her work. Kathryn also served on the transition team to bring the National Football League Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis and worked as a scouting coordinator for the team for a few years. Her spirit for national diversity thrived and was strengthened as she witnessed and valued sports teamwork. Kathryn was an avid fan known for her enjoyment of most sports and TV viewing of three NFL football games each Sunday. She was also an American patriot, loved her country, stood proudly for the flag and sang the National Anthem. Her love for sports encompassed that of her children and grandchildren's activities in golf, football, baseball, tennis and soccer. Kathryn was a frequent golfer and maintained memberships at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice and previously at Old Oakland Golf Club and Woodland Country Club in Indianapolis. She was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Guild and volunteered for many years at the Home for the Aged administered by the Little Sisters of The Poor. Kathryn is survived by her loving spouse of nearly 61 years, Alex, daughter Ann (Steve) Colby of Carrollton, Texas, son Dr. Michael (Dr. Nicolette) Martell of Munster, Indiana, grandchildren Christina Montminy (Alex), Jennifer Colby, Alexander Martell, Nicholas Martell and Elijah Bryan, great-grandson Noah Montminy, great-granddaughter Claire Montminy, a sister Joan (Peter) Lons of Overland Park, Kansas a brother John (Mary Anne) Heffernon of Stilwell, Kansas and several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Janet Martell Huggins, preceded her in death as does her parents and a brother. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11.00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 1301 Center Road, Venice, Florida 34292 Visitation with the family 30 minutes prior. Interment will be conducted at Sarasota National Cemetery at 3 p.m. that afternoon. In appreciation and recognition of their exemplary and compassionate care, donations in Kathryn's memory can be made to Tidewell Hospice-Venice, Philanthropy Office, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.
