Colonel Philip C. Mills, USAF, Retired, age 80, passed away January 31, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Venice, Florida after an extended illness. Col. Mills was born in Winterset, Iowa, September 27, 1936, the son of Charles W.H. Mills and Grace E. Clark Mills. His great, great grandparents Clark were among the first settlers of Madison County. He is a graduate of Winterset High School, where he was quarterback on the football team, a graduate of the University of Iowa, and the University of Iowa College of Law. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and Air Force ROTC. He was married to the former Joan Poots of Newton, Iowa, on June 14, 1959. Col. Mills had a distinguished career in the United States Air Force for 30 years as a Staff Judge Advocate and Appellate Military Judge. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Memberships included the American Bar Association, 50 year member of the Iowa Bar Association, and the Air Force Retired Judge Advocates Association. He was a long time member of the Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas. Col. Mills had a wonderful sense of humor, integrity, loved to be with people, was always kind and gracious except when he was enjoying a good competitive game, ""worked hard and played hard"" all his life and had a memorable, endearing smile. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Terry, Venice,FL; son Matthew, San Antonio,TX; his former wife Joan, Coralville, IA & Venice, FL; son-in-law Rob Johnson, Coralville,IA; grandchildren Daniel, Lauren, Caleb, & Cheyenne; sister Ruth Ann Sandrock, Burlington,IA; and nephew Todd (Sandy) Sandrock, Grand Blanc,MI. To honor the life of Col. Mills, Visitation will be from 2-4 PM, Thursday, February 16 at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel. A memorial service in Winterset, Iowa, and interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice (www.tidewellhospice.org) or the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/FLgulfcoast/).
