Mary Ellen ""Mel"" Blalock, age 79, of Venice, FL, died on September 20, 2016. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan to George and Neva Lonsbury on November 11, 1936. Mel was a long time Venice resident, having moved here with her family in 1941. She was a Venice Police Department Crossing Guard and Sarasota Sheriff's Department Dispatcher and Dispatch Supervisor, retiring in 1984. Surviving family members include her son Bob (Allison) of North Port; daughter Kathy Hirschy (Ray) of North Port; grandchildren Angie, Eric, Robby, Brianna and Tyler; great grandchildren Daisy, Kyla, Paige, Jaret, Caleb, Carson, Alexa, Riley and Spencer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert and granddaughter Shannan. A gathering of friends will be held at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel, on Sunday, September 25th from 2-4 PM.
