Valerie Oberhardt Bost
February 17th, 1924 - June 7th, 2016
Valerie Oberhardt Bost of North Port, Florida made her transition from this Life on June 7, 2016. Born February 17, 1924 on the family farm in Toowoomba, Qld, Australia she was the daughter of Herbert and Lily Coyer Oberhardt. While working for the American Air Force in 1944, she met a young G.I, from Pennsylvania, Ludwig Bost. Three months later, on her 21st Birthday, he was waiting as she left work and said ""I am being shipped out in three days. Will you marry me?” Like so many other War Brides, she said “Yes” and they were immediately wed at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church, in Brisbane. Following a three day Honeymoon, they didn’t see each other for 18 months. Valerie sailed the Matson Lines Mariposa (Butterfly) to San Francisco then by train to Chicago, where Lud met the train and returned to Pittsburgh with his Bride. They lived in the Lincoln Place area where Valerie was very active member of V.F.W., P.T.A., Boyle H.S, Mother’s Association, numerous Catholic Organizations and was a Census Taker. In the late 70s, they started their “Florida Years"" ,where she managed an apartment complex in Delray Beach, before moving to North Port in 1988. Long time residents of Holiday Park and members of San Pedro Parish, “Lud and Val” were married for 65 years until his death in 2010. Val has been a resident of North Port Pines for the last 5 years. Her smile and spirit will be missed forever. She is survived by sons Robert E. Bost of Atlanta, Georgia, Lawrence M. Bost and wife, Cathi Killingworth Bost of Englewood, Florida and, in Australia, one sister Shirley Langsdorf and numerous nieces and nephews, great and grand. A memorial mass will be held at San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port on Monday, October 24, 2016. She will rest with her Husband in the Sarasota National Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Just as the “Mariposa” brought Valerie to a new life in America, may butterflies carry her home to Peace and Happiness in Eternity. Farley Funeral Home in North Port is handling the arrangements.
