Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gheen nee Wilson “Bette” died peacefully in Venice, Florida on May 16, 2016 at the age of 93. Bette is survived by her two children, Richard Gheen of Denver and Mary Lou Gheen of Indianapolis; Four granddaughters, Pamela Herman of Indianapolis, Jennifer Hoffman (Rick Hoffman) of Chicago, Jill Price (Adam Price) of Denver, Stacey James (Mark James) of Salt Lake City. 10 great grandchildren, Zachary (Holly) and Zane Hoffman, Jordan and Alexander Price, Sarah, Hannah, Stephen, Daniel, Michaels and Rebekah James. One great, great grandchild, Caleb and another great, great grandchild due in July, and several nieces and nephews that she adored. She is preceded in death by husband Richard Niles (1950) and E. Clifford Gheen (2007). As well as daughter Pamela Ann, parents Arthur and Edna May Wilson, sister Dorothy Nolting (Henry), brother Arthur (Louise) Wilson, Bette was born on September 29, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis She married Dick Niles, her high school sweetheart in 1941. Over several years the couple welcomed 3 children into their home, their youngest child, Pamela died shortly after birth. Her husband, Dick died in 1950 from Hodgkin's Disease. Bette later married Cliff Gheen. The family lived in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Arizona for a time and Venice, Florida. Bette worked for several years for Dr. Habegger in Indianapolis. Bette was an active and dedicated member of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis before moving full time to Venice, Florida in 2008. She was an avid bridge player, golfer, loved to travel, was a member of the Venice Yacht Club, and most of all enjoyed spend time with her children, and her family. A visitation will be Friday, May 20, 2016 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center located at 2706 W Kessler Blvd N Dr. Indianapolis, 46228. A funeral is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00 am at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, 418 E 34th St, 46205. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bette’s extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Tidwell Hospice House at 220 Wexford Blvd. Venice, Florida 34293.
