Raymond C Zastrow MD, age 85 of Venice Florida died April, 28th 2016 at Sarasota Memorial following complications of surgery. Raymond was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 7, 1930 to Violet and Raymond Zastrow. Ray attended Rufus King and Custer High school. At Marquette University he studied chemistry, finished an MD degree at Marquette School of Medicine. Ray met Mary M Schendt on the dance floor at Moose Lake and was married at St Sebastian’s on June 11, 1955. He was allocated from the Army to the Navy and spent his service at Bremerton, Washington where he and Mary started a family. Ray was an eternal student with additional degrees in nuclear medicine; a master's in education and was a master parliamentarian. On return to Milwaukee he began a 40 year storied career in pathology at St Michael’s Hospital as a consummate physician, leader and teacher. He was a President of Marquette/ MCW Alumni Association, a Walter Zeit Fellow, alumnus of the year. He was an adjunct professor at the medical school where he lectured, served on many committees including admissions. He was president of the College of American Pathologists for two years and named Pathologist of the Year in 1998. He was an AMA delegate and president of the Wisconsin State Medical Society in 1991. Ray and Mary chose Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to raise their four children but spent the summers on nearby North Lake, Wisconsin. 18 years later the family made North Lake their home. Ray had great enthusiasm in everything he did but his greatest passion was golf. He was a member of Bluemound Country Club, a member of Chenequa CC and Plantation CC in Venice, Florida where he split time in his retirement. He also was an usher at his churches, a Knight of Columbus and a great friend to many people and to countless charities. He is survived by his wife Mary of 60 yrs. His son Raymond J Zastrow (Mary Kay) Mequon, Wisconsin, Joseph F Zastrow (Caroline) Mooresville, North Carolina, Lawrence R Zastrow (Frank Printz) Charlotte, North Carolina and Barbara A. Mattrisch (Donald) Englewood, Florida. He is also survived by 10 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild. A mass of celebration of his life will be held May 14, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Venice, Florida at 10:00 AM with a lunch to follow at the Plantations Country Club in Venice, FL. Burial will be sometime in August in Hartland, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers please contribute to some of his favorite charities: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Venice, Florida and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
