Thelma Stern Neubauer

Thelma Stern Neubauer, age 91, died in Venice, FL on November 27, 2015 at Tidewell Hospice. Born on December 7, 1923 in Norfolk, VA to Thelma Bendler Stern and Milford Josiah Stern she was the eldest sister of seven children. Thelma was recognized in 1995 by the Virginia Historical Society as the first female to perform official duties aboard several US Navy ships during WWII, as a civilian draftsman working at the Norfolk Navy Yard. Following the war, Thelma moved to Baltimore, MD where she met the love of her life, Clarence “Chuck” Neubauer, with whom she raised five children. She is survived by her five children; Sandy, Diane (Schaefer), Ann (Fettig), Courtney ""Cork"" and Geoff as well as seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial will be held in Maryland. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Tidewell Hospice, Philanthropy Department, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238, or to the Hospice of your choice. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements.
