A memorial gathering will take place August 16th at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, Michigan to celebrate and honor this wonderful man. The family would like to share words written by his Grandson Matthew Perry: My grandfather, Captain, passed away last night. He was the greatest inspiration I’ve ever known. He grew up at Greenfield Village where he camped with the Fords and learned from the likes of Thomas Edison and George Washington Carver. He hand-built kayaks and explored the rivers of Michigan. A lifelong sailor, he served his country in the Pacific, surviving a Kamikaze attack in the Philippines and working with his crew to bring the extremely crippled ship home to the states. He graduated from the University of Michigan. Worked as an engineer at Westinghouse. And founded the family business that put my brother and I through college and gave us the happy lives we’re able to live today. He married the love of his life, my loving grandmother Mim, and together (for more years than I can count) they raised a family that I’m proud to call my own. Always on top of the latest technology, you could find him in his office tinkering with some electronic toy or computer. Always quick with a quip and a pun and a smile, he was always fun to be around. He’s already missed. But will live on in our hearts. I miss you, Captain. A memorial gathering will take place August 16th at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, Michigan to celebrate and honor this wonderful man. Memorial donations may be made in memory of John to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Farley Funeral Home in Venice, Florida is handling the arrangement.
