John Robert McFadden
July 4th, 1927 - April 11th, 2015
John Robert McFadden ""Pop"" of Venice, FL passed away on April 11, 2015 after a short illness. Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Staten Island, the son of Thomas and Margaret Mahoney McFadden. While attending high school, he decided to join the war effort and he enlisted in the Army in 1945. He was first deployed to Korea and eventually to Hawaii where he played shortstop for the U.S. Army Team in Honolulu. Upon being discharged, he returned home and married Jean Fischer in 1948. Together they moved to Nanuet, NY in 1951 where they raised their six children. John worked his entire 27 year career as a maintenance supervisor for the Tappan Zee Bridge. In addition, he faithfully served as a Volunteer Fireman for the town of Nanuet and played on their baseball team. He was an active Member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church where he served on the Holy Name Society for more than thirty years. In 1986 he retired with his wife to Venice, FL. An avid golfer, John spent several days a week at Waterford Golf Club with his loyal ""gang"". When not golfing, John spent his days and nights with his wife socializing at the local chapters of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Sundays he could be found in the pews of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. He is survived by his loving wife Jean of 67 years, his six children, Sandra deVarenne (Remy) of Chatham, NJ, Kathleen Bekiaris (Martin) of Scotch Plains, NJ, John McFadden Jr. (Patricia) of Nanuet, Thomas McFadden of Venice, FL, Jean McFadden of San Antonio, TX and Robert (Dolores) McFadden of Stony Point, NY. In addition he is survived by 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas and sister Marilyn Tully.
