Beverly J. DeVries
January 22nd, 1940 - May 16th, 2014
Beverly J. DeVries was born on January 22, 1940 in Leamington, Ontario to Katherine and Charles Gould. She and her family moved to East Detroit in 1953. She graduated from East Detroit High School in 1957. Bev received her bachelor's degree from Alma College in 1961. It was while at Alma College that she met George DeVries, her future husband. Her first teaching assignment was in the Royal Oak, MI school system. On June 23, 1962, Bev and George were married and her teaching career was continued at Spring Lake Junior High in Spring Lake, MI. She retired in June of 1991. She was very proud to be part of the teaching profession and felt a great deal of reward and fulfillment in teaching to her junior high students. During her lifetime, she enjoyed traveling, reading, tennis, and golf. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her friends and family. She is survived by George, her husband of 51 years, a daughter, Trisha Larsen, son-in-law Scott, grandchildren Ryan, Georgeanne, and Rebecca; sister Pat Reynolds, brother-in-law Tom, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake, MI on Wednesday, May 28th, with internment at Spring Lake Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later at St. Thomas More Church in Sarasota, Florida. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Bev may be given to TideWell Hospice of Venice, FL. 34292 or the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, Grand Haven, MI. 49417.
