Steven Walker Joyner, 25, of Nokomis, died May 11, 2010 from complications related to his childhood battle with brain cancer. Steven was a remarkable young man who was proudly defined by his courageous spirit and unconquerable will. Despite his numerous disabilities and challenges, Steven took pleasure in achieving what others told him would be impossible. He inspired both students and teachers alike at Venice Elementary, Laurel Nokomis Middle School, and Venice High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also a two-time recipient of the prestigious Golden Eagle Award and the Disney Doers and Dreamers Award. After graduating in 2005 from Venice High School as a member of the Graphic Arts Academy, Steven took the next brave step – a step that doctors would have never dreamed possible a mere ten years prior – as he attended college at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Steven valued his newfound independence and embraced the rigor of his collegiate schedule, and he was always ready to celebrate the completion of another semester with his family, friends, and Papa John’s pizza. Steven was only two courses away from receiving his Associate’s Degree. Steven’s passions were abundant, and he enjoyed spending his time dabbling in photography, cooking (usually with chocolate), computer design, gardening, and painting. His artistic talent earned him a first-place ribbon at the Venice Art Festival. He relished time spent with his family, his adoring nephew, and his Macintosh computer. Steven was a fervent advocate and star fundraiser for the local unit of the American Cancer Society, which named him “honorary chairman” for many years. Steven Joyner is survived by his parents, W. Lynn and Priscilla Joyner, his brother and wife, David and Caitlin Joyner, and his nephew, Austin Joyner, all of Nokomis. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Farley Funeral Home, Venice, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
