Richard Steele
June 6th, 1932 - March 25th, 2009
Richard (Dick) Steele of Venice, Florida, formally of Jackson, Michigan passed away in Venice, Florida on March 25, 2009. Richard and his family moved to Venice in 1976. Richard graduated from Jackson High School, Jackson, Michigan in 1951 and Jackson Community College where he obtained an associates degree. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was stationed at Key West, Florida, after serving in the Navy Richard joined Summit Township Police Dept. and later the City of Jackson Fire Department. In addition to being a firefighter after graduating from Jackson Community College Richard was promoted to Superintendent of the fire alarm system, maintaining the system for the City of Jackson. He also rode the rescue unit. He retired in 1973 at the age of 39 following injuries fighting a general alarm fire. Past activities included Governor of Lodge 1308 Loyal Order of Moose, the DAV, and American Legion. He is survived by his wife Joan Howard Steele and his children: Cindy and LaNae Steele of Sarasota, Florida Rich, Sharie, Jessie and William (Woody) Steele of Nokomis, Fl. Kay Steele Barkow (Tony), Cooper Barkow Venice, Florida and Eric Steele of Venice, Florida. A sister Nancy (Don) Harris of Jackson, Michigan and a sister-in-law Sally Howard Earl (Jack) of Jackson, Michigan and many nieces and nephews. As was his request cremation has taken place followed by a private family memorial at his home in celebration of his life. Donations may be made in his name to Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care, Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fl.
