Catherine Handy Becker, 76, of Venice, FL passed away January 10, 2009 at her home. Born May 10, 1932 in Holyoke, MA the daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary (Collins) Hickey. She came to Venice in 1992 from West Springfield, MA were Catherine had been a college reference librarian for Westfield State College for 20 years. Professionally she was a member of ALA and volunteered at the Venice Branch Library. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church where she volunteered and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of HAV of Venice Hospital, Audubon Society, and appeared in the 1991-92 Who’s Who of American Women. Catherine is survived by her husband Bernhard, daughters, Cornelia Gonsalves of Cincinnati, OH, Roberta Whitney of Andover, MA and Mary Elizabeth Handy of San Diego, CA; step-daughters, Jerilyn Devin of Bristol, RI, Heidi Becker of Brockton, MA; step-son, Gregory Becker of Westfield, MA, sister, Martina Brennan of Holyoke, MA; brother, John Hickey of Naples, FL and ten grandchildren. Mrs. Becker was preceded in death by Wallace H. Handy in 1961.
