Harry J. Batty, Sr., age 93, died Friday, January 2, 2009 at North Port Pines Retirement Residence. Born March 27, 1915 in New Bedford, Mass. to the late William E.G. and Fannie May Batty. He was the husband of Beatrice M. Batty, who was his loving wife for 70 years. Harry was a combat veteran of World War II, having served with the 83rd Infantry Division. He saw action in Normandy, North France, Belgium and Germany. He was wounded in action in December 1944. He served with the U.S. Army until December 1945. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in New Bedford until his retirement in 1975. Harry was a permanent resident of Holiday Park in North Port beginning in 1989. He was active at Holiday Park where he was on the board of directors for many years, and also served as First Vice President. He also served on the board of the Home Owners Association. Harry served on the advisory board of the City of North Port Utilities Committee. He was a member of San Pedro Catholic Church of North Port. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Beatrice M. Batty; Son and daughter in law Harry J. Batty, Jr. and Elaine M. Batty of Rincon, Georgia; grandchildren John Batty of Nashville, Tenn. and Christopher Batty of Los Angeles, CA.; great grandchildren Erica, Michael, William, and Emily; sister, Charlotte Laubi of North Attleboro, Mass.
