Why Every Veteran and Military Spouse Should Have a Will

Serving your country often means putting others first, but when it comes to your future, putting your wishes in writing is one of the most important ways to protect the people you love. A will ensures your assets go where you want, minimizes confusion, and helps your family avoid legal setbacks during an already difficult time.

For Veterans, having a will in place also helps ensure military benefits are properly distributed. For spouses, it’s a key step in making sure the sacrifices you’ve made together are honored with clarity and respect.

8 Best Places for Free (or Low-Cost) Wills

1. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

The VA offers free estate planning, including online will preparation, to individuals covered under these benefit programs:

  • Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) – For active duty, reserve, and National Guard members
  • Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) – For Veterans who previously had SGLI and want continued coverage
  • Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) – For spouses and dependent children of service members with SGLI
  • Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) – For service members who experienced a serious injury while on duty

2. Military Pro Bono Project

The Military Pro Bono Project is managed by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel (LAMP). It accepts case referrals on behalf of active-duty military personnel. All guidance from attorneys is offered pro bono, meaning for free.

3. American Bar Association Veterans Legal Services

The ABA offers a program specifically designed to assist Veterans with a wide range of legal issues. Volunteer attorneys across all states provide free legal services, including help with wills and estate planning.

4. National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP)

Since 1981, NVLSP has worked to ensure that Veterans receive the benefits they deserve. They offer free legal representation and assistance with estate planning for those who qualify.

5. FreeWill

FreeWill is an online platform that allows Veterans to create a free, legally binding will from the comfort of their home. The service guides users through the process step-by-step, ensuring their final wishes are clearly documented.

6. LawDepot

Law Depot offers a free online tool to create wills and powers of attorney, with templates available in English and Spanish. While simple to use, it might not be robust enough for complex estate planning.

7. Gloucester County Office of Veterans Affairs (New Jersey)

This office provides free simple wills to all New Jersey active military personnel and Veterans who served in active duty (other than for training) and were honorably discharged. Check with your state’s Veteran Affair’s office to see if a similar program is offered where you live.

8. Legal Services Center – Veterans Law Unit

The Legal Services Center of the Harvard Law School offers estate planning services to Veterans and their dependents who cannot afford an attorney. Its focus is on helping families attain financial well-being and stability.
